Notes for ROBERT WYNNE:
Note: Robert was an apprentice to John Rose, an alderman and member of the Woolendrapers Guild. This was a period in which domestic English wool and weaving industries were booming. Woolendrapers controlled the wool industry by setting prices, appointing apprentices, regulating supply, and arranging for the exportation of wool and woolen cloth products. It was also a period of conflict between Catholics and Protestants, of extreme contrasts between wealthy merchants and land owners and the vagrants and destitute. Recently ended wars had dislocated society severely, with inflation and high taxes. Returned soldiers often were maimed, hungry, or bandits. In 1589 Henry III, King of France, was assassinated; on his death bed, he named Henry IV, King of Navarre, as his successor. The Catholic League named the Cardinal de Bourbon, Charles X, as King of France, so Henry IV laid siege to Paris. All was not war, however. Shakespeare published the play "Henry VI", Edmund Spenser published "The Faerie Queene", and Galileo published observations on experiments on falling bodies in1590. Robert became a freeman in 1590, at 27, and soon after married Frances Wattmer. They lived, and had their wollen draper's shop, in the Parish of St. Mary Bredman, on the north side of High Street, west of Mercery Lane. Frances came from a prominent famuly, for William Wattmer served as Mayor of Canterbury in 1609 (the year Robert and Frances died)and again in 1629. Robert himself served as Canterbury Mayor in 1599, nine years after becoming a freeman. Robert continued as an influential woolendraper, and a John Robertes was apprenticed to him, completing his term in 1612 (although Robert died in 1609). Robert and Frances died of The Plague within two days of one another. They were buried together, on the 8th, in St. George's Church. Frances' brother William Wattmer took the Wynne children to a house outside the city and procured a nurse, goodwife Maple, for them.

Notes for PETER WYNNE:
Note: When Peter was a toddler, Henry IV of France declared war on Spain; the Spanish landed in Cornwall, burned Penzance and Mousehole, pirate ports. In return, the English sacked Cadiz, Spain. When he was ten years old, Queen Elizabeth died, and was succeeded by her cousin, James VI of Scotland, as James I of England and Ireland. Peter, at sixteen, and John, at fifteen, were sent to the King's School, under Roger Raven's head-mastership, for a year. In 1620 the Pilgrims left Plymouth England and founded the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. In 1625 James I of England died, and was succeeded by Charles I of England and Scotland. Peter married Martha Coppin, the daughter of William Coppin. The Coppin's came from a long line of distinguished ancestors, reaching back to the Court of Edward the Confessor. Peter became a freeman in Canterbury in 1626, at thirty-three, by right of birth, and wore the designation "gentleman." On 4 Aug 1626 Peter Wynne, Notary, was called before the Court to affirm that he would henceforth repair to Reculver Church for Divine Service! --to my son, Robert Wynne, one cokernutt cupp tipped and footed with silver, my seal ring, all my silver plate marked R. Va.. He married (1) MARY FRANCES SLOMAN 1657 in Canterbury, Kent England. She was born Abt. 1615 in London, Middlesex England. He married (2) ALICE PEYTON Abt. 1678. She was born Abt. 1630 in London, Middlesex England.
Notes for ROBERT WYNNE:
Note: Robert was christened at St. Dunstans in Canterbury on 24 Dec 1622. He became an ardent Royalist and was relatively well-to-do. He made his home at St. Georges Parish, the family estate in Canterbury. Robert owned properties in Kent, a farm in Whitestaple Parish near Canterbury, two houses in St. Mildred's Parish in Canterbury, an oatmeal mill near St. Georges, and two other houses. He must have been deeply involved in the turmoil of that time, but he was never knighted ---perhaps exempted from the "knighthood fines" used by the Stuarts to raise money , because of his loyalty to their cause. In 1642, Charles I marched to Westminister to arrest five members of the Commons. The attempt failed; he fled with his family to Hampton Court. the English civil war began; the king's supporters, the Caveliers, took Marlboough; the king's opponents, the Roundheads, took Westminister. Robert became a Capt. in the Royalist Army, but many battles were lost. In1646 the war ended with the surrender of Oxford to the Roundheads; the Parliamentary commissioners presented Charles I with the Newcastle Propositions, demanding religious reforms and surrender of control of the army for twenty years. The King refused, escaped, was captured and then tried. Charles I was executed 30 Jan 1849. Since England was no longer a safe place for loyalists, Robert immigrated to VA in 1651, when Cromwell's forces entered London and Charles II, the king's son, became a fugitive. He kept his property in England, but by 1655 he owned a plantation "Georges" in Jordan's Parish, Charles City Co. Col. Robert Wynne was a wealthy Justice of Charles City Co. (1656) and Burgess representing Charles City Co. in the Virginia House of Burgesses (1657-1658 and 1659-1660). The new court sessions for that part of the county below the James River were first held at Merchant's Hope 16 Feb 1658. In 1658 he was sworn in as sheriff. In Sep 1659, he was fined 300 lb of tobacco for being absent from the Burgess meeting. He served as Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1661-1675), being, during the entire existence of Virginia's Long Parliment, Speaker of the House of Burgesses. Documents sent to the King were signed by both the Governor and Robert Wynne. In 1662 he was named as surveyor for a road on the southside of the James River. 1 Jul 1675 will of Robert Wynne of Jordan's Parish, Charles City Co. VA --- to be buried in Jordan's Church, as near as possible to my son Robert, my estate in England to be divided as follows: to my eldest son, Thomas Wynne, one farm in Whitestaple Parish in Kent near Canterbury, commonly called Limbet Banckes, if he died to my son Joshua, if he died to my daughter Woodlief. To my son Thomas, two houses in Canterbury in St. Mildred's Parish. To my youngest son, Joshua, one house and Oatmeal Mill lying in Dover Lane without St. Georges in Canterbury, commonly called Lilly Pot, and two houses adjoining where a Ropemaker and one Rawlins were formerly tenants. Touching my estate in VA, to my son Thomas, all the cattle of his own mark, except one cow called Moll, which is to be killed for provisions. To my son Joshua, my plantation called Georges with all the tobacco houses. To my daughter Woodlief, one servant of four years to serve the next shipping after my decease. To my grandson and godson George Woodlief one filly foal. All the rest of my estate in England and Virginia to my wife and executrix, Mary.

Notes for WALTER FRANK WINN: Walter F. Winn Dies After Lengthy Illness Veteran Atlanta Journal Photographer To Be Paid Tribute Sunday; Burial Monday
Walter F. Winn, whose photographs have illustrated the news of the South in The Atlanta Journal for 30 years, died Friday evening, December 1, 1939 after a long illness that had forced his retirement from active duty more than a year ago.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:30 O'clock in Spring Hill chapel by Dr. Wallace Rogers, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Griffin.
Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Marietta at 11 O'clock Monday morning.
Pallbearers will be John Paschall, Lambdin Kay, H. G. Blasingame, Edwin Camp, J. S. Pope, O. B. Keeler, Sam Dull and Morgan Blake.
Mr. Winn is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. R. B. Jones; two sons, Roy F. and Walter T. Winn; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Leathers and Mrs. Lesley Winn, and a brother, Joe Winn, of California.
News of Walter Winn's death came as a profound shock and brought an acute sense of personal loss to his associates on The Journal, and to an uncounted legion of friends, not only in the South but throughout the nation.
His courageous fight to regain his health was followed and cheered by his intimates, and though little progress had been made, his condition was not thought to be critical and his death was sudden.
The story of Walter Winn's life, rich, eventful, and varied, is not easily told in words. It could be covered best with pictures, for pictures were his life.
An Adventurous Career
If all the photographs he has made for The Journal in the past 30 years could be made into a film, the result would be a brilliant panorama, a daily record of the history of Atlanta and the South, of the joys and disasters of a whole generation of the people Walter Winn kept under the eye of his camera.
The keynote of his career was adverture. He enlisted, very young, in the Army that set forth bravely to rescue Cuba from Spain, and served with distinction there and in the Philippines.
When he returned to private life, he turned naturally to the things that were new and exciting - news photography and automobiles.
The dean of Southern newspaper photographers, he was among the first to see the need of a regular staff of picture-makers on a metropolitan daily, and The Journal's photographic department was built up under his skilled direction and the stimulus of his unflagging enthusiasm.
He probably was the first photographer in the country to use the automobile with regularity in covering picture assignments, and he was the official photographer on all of the historic motorcades which The Journal sponsored, both in the early days of motor travel and in the recent hard-surfaced era.
Always Heard the Call
As he assembled and trained a staff of crack cameramen, executive duties claimed him more and more. But, the call of a big story never failed to fire him with the desire to shoot the scene himself, and he made pictures for the paper right up until his enforced retirement.
Walter Winn had traveled literally hundreds of thousands of miles on assignments and in quest of pictures which his own keen news instincts scented out.
He had been the working companion of all the great newsmen of The Journal through the years - Grantland Rice, Laurence Stallings, Ward Greene, Fuzzy Woodruff. In more recent years he had tracked camera material in company with John Paschall, Ralph Smith, Morgan Blake, O. B. Keeler, Ole Timer, Guy Butler, Ed Miles, Ernest Rogers and others.
It was after one of these expeditions that Morgan Blake gave him his most cherished title - "The World's Greatest Companion."
Out of all the phases of the human scene which he watched and photographed, he developed two major passions, sports and music.
Few outstanding athletes of the past quarter-century had not faced him across the camera, and seldom was a big game played, an important match, which he did not scan through the lenses of his camera.
Lived With His Camera
Among his fascinating collection of photos are to be found a few in which he faced the camera's eye himself - pictures of him with Bobby Jones, with Jack Dempsey, with Woodrow Wilson, and a host of other celebrities in every sphere.
He lived with a camera in his arms and could start out on an assignment instantaneously.
On one occasion, he went East with the Tech football team on 10 minutes' notice. He had not a single extra garment, but he had an armful of essential picture equipment.
He made one of two trips to Europe on 24-hour notice.
All sports engaged his interest and photographic skill. He trained with the Crackers, and he trained with nearly every major Southern football team, for year after year.
Many of the great coaches sent for him to make pictures of their teams - Dan McGugin and Wallace Wade among them.
Among his most recent protégés were the young boxers who fought under the Journal's banner of the national Golden Gloves. He accompanied Guy Butler on all the trips to Chicago and New York, encouraging the boys and shooting them in action.
Passion for Music
His passion for music was of long-standing, and he had probably heard more operas than any man in the world who wasn't actually connected with the Metropolitan Company.
One of his boon companions of older days was Billy Guard, the famous press agent of the Met. With O. B. Keeler and Ernest Rogers, he would meet Billy for a festive breakfast in the Terminal Station when the company arrived at the beginning of each season.
He could walk into the side door of the Metropolitan in New York and be welcomed like a star.
Caruso and Farrar and Ponselle and Scotti - all the luminaries of the opera world were his close friends, as well as the decorative subjects of many of his best pictures.
One of his greatest scoops was a picture which was printed and re-printed throughout the world for years - a shot of Hellen Keller "Listening" to Caruso's lips with her fingers.
On his last trip to Europe, he visited the only surviving daughter of Richard Wagner, and carried away her autographed photo.
Genius for the Unusual
Presidents of the United States from Taft on have become familiar with the friendly face of Walter Winn across the top of the camera. He tracked many of them on political campaigns, and rang up many scoops.
He had a genius for achieving the unusual, the original shot. When Theodore Roosevelt came to Atlanta once during his great Bull Moose campaign, Walter Winn went to the station to find him surrounded with camera men and all the best points of vantage occupied.
He immediately climbed onto a switch engine and made an ingenious shot of the photographers shooting Teddy - a type of picture familiar enough in these days of candid-camera technique, but entirely novel in those days.
Among the members of the Georgia press, Walter Winn was a beloved and familiar figure. He traveled with Georgia editors to Cuba and to Canada, he attended every convention and institute, and he had photographed practically every editor, city and county, in the state.
A few years ago he was named the first and only official photographer of the Georgia Press Association.
Capacity for Kindliness
So the outline of the story runs - but only an outline that could be filled in to occupy many volumes.
Walter Winn had many great achievements to his credit, but his greatest, perhaps, was his capacity for making friends, his un-failing kindliness and generosity and his genuine love of his fellow man, be he outfielder or president, halfback or prima donna.
He was a native of Newton County, Georgia, though most of his life was lived elsewhere. He had resided for the past several years at 2169 Peachtree Road.
He was a member of the Yaarab Temple of the Shrine, the Shrine Legion of Honor, the Atlanta Scottish Rite Consistory, and the Gate City Masonic Lodge.
